The LONGITUDE expedition traveled 28,000 miles, almost two-thirds of its 41,000-mile journey, before changing the engine oil. This far and away exceeded the typical oil change interval, especially under the grueling temperatures and harsh driving conditions that they experienced. Why change oil at the 28,000 mile mark? Their oil had taken on a high silicate content due to all of the dust they had encountered which could have caused engine and oil deterioration. Essentially, they saw more dust in a day than most cars see in a year. Without Mobil 1 motor oil, the expedition’s vehicles may not have been able to stand up to the temperature extremes that the team faced: from 128° degrees Fahrenheit (53° Celsius) in the Mojave Desert, down to -58° Fahrenheit (-50° Celsius) in Siberia.
But the real test is in the real world. “Would you bet your life on a motor oil?” asked Baggarly. “We did.” Keep reading to learn more about this momentous journey and how Mobil 1 helped Nick Baggarly go the distance.
